WhatsApp to roll out voice recording feature for missed calls

Early users report that voice messages are limited to 1 minute, and the prompt to leave a message appears after the call rings out.

Meta-owned WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new voice recording feature that will allow users to leave a voice message when a WhatsApp call goes unanswered, a move reminiscent of traditional voicemail but tailored for modern instant messaging.

This highly anticipated feature is set to make voice communication on WhatsApp more seamless, personal, and effective.

How the feature works

If a voice or video call goes unanswered, the caller will be prompted with an option to record a short voice message.

Once recorded, the message is sent automatically to the recipient's chat window as an audio note.

The recipient can play it back at any time, just like a regular voice note.

The feature will likely include end-to-end encryption, keeping in line with WhatsApp’s privacy standards.

“This brings more flexibility to communication,” said a Meta spokesperson. “Sometimes a message is too urgent to type, and now users won’t lose the moment just because someone missed their call.”

Voice call interface

In a culture where calling is still very common, and people are often in transit or offline, voice follow-ups will reduce the frustration of unreturned calls.

The feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp Beta on both Android and iOS devices, under the app’s voice call interface.

Early users report that voice messages are limited to 1 minute, and the prompt to leave a message appears after the call rings out.

WhatsApp has not confirmed a global rollout date, but tech insiders suggest the update could go public before the end of 2025.
